Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer in the Database Excellence group. You will build data frameworks and tooling to keep GitLab’s datastores scalable and healthy across GitLab.com and self-managed deployments.

Focus areas include retention, lifecycle management, and enforcement at schema-change time. You’ll work with PostgreSQL and Ruby on Rails in a fully remote, distributed environment, collaborating with product, infrastructure, and analytics teams to design scalable solutions that

Qualifications

• Must have extensive PostgreSQL experience in large production environments.
• Proficiency with Ruby on Rails; design and review backend features.
• Ability to reason about software design, algorithms, and performance at system level.
• Strong written communication; comfortable working asynchronously in a remote, distributed team.
• Self-directed work style; able to manage priorities as a "manager of one".
• Alignment with GitLab values: transparency, collaboration, inclusion, open source.
• Willingness to participate in tier 2 database on-call rotation in your time zone.

Responsibilities

• Develop and iterate backend features and data frameworks for data at scale across SaaS and self-managed deployments.
• Design and implement data retention and lifecycle management frameworks and enforcement tooling.
• Build guardrails and schema-change-time enforcement to prevent unsustainable data growth.
• Collaborate with product, UX, frontend, infrastructure, and analytics teams to ship high-performing solutions.
• Review database changes for data integrity, safety, and performance across deployments.
• Develop tooling such as SQL traffic replay and background operations frameworks for scalability.
