Job summary

GitLab Inc. is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer in a fully remote UK role to evolve data frameworks and tooling that keep GitLab's application datastores scalable, healthy, and safe. You’ll work on proactive retention and lifecycle management for GitLab.com and self-managed deployments.

You will partner with product, analytics, and infra teams to design scalable data solutions, review changes for integrity, and drive data health initiatives across environments.

Qualifications

• Professional software engineering experience working with PostgreSQL in large, complex production environments, including high availability and zero-downtime migrations.
• Proficiency with Ruby on Rails or another Ruby framework, including backend development and review.
• Ability to reason about software design, algorithms, and performance trade-offs at a system level.
• Strong written communication skills and comfort working asynchronously in an all-remote team.
• Self-directed work style with effective organizational skills and prioritization.
• Alignment with GitLab's values: transparency, collaboration, inclusion, and open source.
• Willingness to learn and apply new tools across data, infrastructure, or developer tooling domains.

Responsibilities

• Develop and evolve backend features and data frameworks for data at scale across SaaS and self-managed deployments.
• Design and build data retention and lifecycle management frameworks, including policy enforcement and automated removal tooling.
• Build guardrails and schema-change-time enforcement to curb unsustainable data growth.
• Collaborate with product, UX, frontend, infra, software delivery, and analytics to ship high-performing solutions.
• Review and improve database-related changes to ensure data integrity and performance across deployments.
• Develop tooling such as SQL traffic replay and background operations to surface scalability issues.
• Research and implement improvements to data retention, performance, and data health, including migration testing.
• Document database best practices and architecture guidance for developer teams.
• Develop proactive tooling and guardrails to detect and remediate issues early in the lifecycle.
