Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer (Ruby) to join the Plan: Spec-Driven Development team. You will own backend work across flows, APIs, and data models, using Ruby on Rails, Python, PostgreSQL, and related AI gateway technologies.

You’ll collaborate with a distributed team in an all-remote environment, influence technical direction, mentor peers, and deliver major features from concept to release in short iteration cycles.

Qualifications

• Strong Rails experience in large production codebase.
• Production Python experience.
• Ability to own features end-to-end from design to release.
• Experience with API design and scalable backend systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead backend features from early product discussions through design, rollout, and post-launch learning.
• Build flows, APIs, data models behind agent-generated work items and durable specifications.
• Develop evaluation systems for workflow quality and token cost.
• Collaborate with product, design, and users to shape scope and make trade-offs.
• Mentor other engineers and contribute to technical direction.
