GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, implement, and evolve backend capabilities for a global, AI-enabled platform. You will influence technical direction across teams, improving quality, reliability, and performance of our systems while collaborating with product, frontend, infrastructure, data, and security groups.

You will contribute to architecture decisions, mentor engineers, and drive operational excellence.

Qualifications

• Strong backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning.
• Proficiency in modern backend languages and systems programming.
• Experience designing modular backend boundaries and bounded contexts.
• Ability to lead through influence and clear written communication.
• Experience building or operating agentic AI systems in production.

Responsabilités

• Design and ship moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance.
• Define backend standards for style, maintainability, testing, APIs, and operations.
• Mentor associate and intermediate engineers, remove blockers, improve delivery practices.
• Diagnose and prevent performance/reliability issues at scale; participate in incident response.
• Integrate AI into production engineering workflows and coach others on responsible usage.
