Job summary

GitLab in the United Kingdom seeks a Senior Backend Engineer to design, implement, and evolve backend capabilities for a global, AI-enabled platform. You will tackle high-scope problems, influence technical direction, and collaborate across product, frontend, data, and security teams.

You will drive architectural decisions, raise the bar on quality and performance, mentor engineers, and apply agentic AI techniques to production systems, while thriving in a remote-first, asynchronous environment.

Qualifications

• Deep Backend Expertise: strong command of backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning.
• Adaptability: proficiency in modern backend languages and systems programming.
• Architectural Judgment: experience designing or evolving modular backend boundaries and migrations.
• Influence: ability to lead through technical judgment and clear written communication.
• Agentic AI Expertise: proven experience building or operating agentic systems in production.

Responsibilities

• Drive Technical Direction: design and ship moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance.
• Raise the Bar: define backend standards for style, testing, APIs, and operations.
• Mentor & Lead: mentor engineers and improve team delivery through reviews.
• Operational Excellence: diagnose and prevent performance/reliability issues at scale.
• AI Integration: use AI in production engineering and coach others on responsible use.
