Job summary

GitLab, the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, seeks a Senior Backend Engineer to design and evolve backend capabilities across teams. You will influence architecture, improve reliability, and drive scalable solutions in a remote-first, asynchronous environment.

You will collaborate with product, frontend, infrastructure, data, and security teams, shaping requirements and delivering high-quality, AI-enabled systems for millions of users.

Qualifications

• Deep expertise in backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning.
• Proficiency in modern backend languages; ability to learn multiple languages.
• Experience designing modular backend boundaries and migration-safe architectures.
• Ability to lead through influence, clear written communication, bridging product and technical needs.
• Proven experience building or operating agentic AI systems in production.

Responsibilities

• Drive Technical Direction: design and ship backend features with minimal guidance.
• Raise the Bar: define backend standards for style, testing, APIs, and reliability.
• Mentor & Lead: remove blockers and improve delivery through code/design reviews.
• Operational Excellence: diagnose performance issues; participate in incident response.
• AI Integration: use AI in production engineering to improve outcomes and coach others.
