Job summary

Lotus Recruitment Ltd is seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant for a specialist school in Margate, Kent. You will support pupils with SEMH needs and ASD, guiding learning and behaviour throughout the school day.

The role offers a Monday–Friday timetable, 8:30am–3:30pm, with a September 2026 start. A nurturing, structured environment helps pupils overcome barriers to learning while you develop professionally.

Qualifications

  • Experience in SEMH / ASD support within a school setting is required.
  • Ability to support children with additional needs and challenging behaviour.

Responsibilities

  • Support pupils with SEMH and ASD needs throughout the school day.
  • Provide one-to-one and small-group academic and social support.
  • Promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation.
  • Build trusting relationships with pupils and staff.
  • Support learning and individual needs under the guidance of teachers.
  • Collaborate with the school team to maintain a safe, structured environment.

The Role

Lotus Recruitment is seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Margate, supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone with experience supporting children and young people with additional needs. The school provides a nurturing, structured environment where pupils are supported to overcome barriers to learning and achieve their potential both academically and personally.

Responsibilities
  • Supporting pupils with SEMH and ASD needs throughout the school day
  • Providing one-to-one and small-group support
  • Promoting positive behaviour and emotional regulation
  • Building positive relationships based on consistency and trust
  • Supporting pupils with their learning and individual needs
  • Working alongside teachers and the wider school team
  • Helping to create a safe, structured and engaging learning environment
The Ideal Candidate
  • Previous experience working within an SEMH school, alternative provision, specialist setting or similar educational environment is highly desirable
  • Experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour
  • Confident, resilient and able to remain calm under pressure
  • Firm but fair approach with strong behaviour management skills
  • Passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • A background in education, youth work, residential care or similar settings would be advantageous
