Rotational Service Lead Pharmacy Technician

The closing date is 07 May 2025

This is a substantive role that significantly contributes to the management of medicines, patient welfare, and organizational efficiency. The post is rotational, designed to provide broad experience and training to support further career progression.

If some essential criteria are not met, applicants may be considered for a progression band 5-6 post. Upon successful achievement of set objectives within an agreed timeframe, the post holder will progress to band 6. Details of objectives and timeframes will be provided if offered this opportunity.

Main duties of the job

Provide senior leadership in pharmacy services at University Hospitals Sussex, including services to Brighton University.

Undertake duties within specialist areas such as medicines optimisation and dispensary services.

Coordinate and be responsible for the training and development of trainee pharmacists and pre-registration pharmacy technicians, focusing on clinical and dispensary services.

Contribute to service development, including addressing current deficiencies and expanding services around counselling, adherence, flow coordination, and discharge transfers.

Job responsibilities
  • Provide expert leadership and knowledge in clinical and technical pharmacy services at both pharmacy and ward levels.
  • Create weekly clinical rotas and deliver medicines optimisation services to designated divisions.
  • Ensure accurate medicines optimisation, including drug history taking, medicines reconciliation, patient own drug assessments, and supply and reordering assessments, especially for planned admissions and pre-operative clinics.
  • Relabel medicines accurately when doses or frequencies change.
  • Organize timely supplies of medicines and transcribe prescriptions for hospital use and discharge.

  • NVQ Level 3 Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with GPhC
  • Experience in ward and dispensary services coordination
  • Hospital pharmacy experience as a Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician or similar
  • Training experience, including ward-based/dispensary training for pharmacy staff
  • Experience training other pharmacy or MDT members
  • Ability to work well in a team and overcome barriers to understanding
  • Initiative, problem-solving skills, and ability to implement service changes
  • Proficiency with pharmacy computer systems and report writing
  • Supervision experience within pharmacy settings
  • Management of staff and HR policies
  • Ability to work independently and liaise with pharmacists and non-routine inquiries
  • Time management skills
  • Nationally accredited medicines management qualifications (e.g., MOPs, AIMMs)
  • Experience as an educational/practice supervisor for MM, ACPT, NVQ 2 & 3
  • Proven MDT working skills and data evaluation for service improvement
  • Planning and organizational skills for staff management and HR processes
  • Experience in delivering medicines management savings and reporting
  • Knowledge of CMM pharmacy computer systems
  • Experience in recruitment and selection of technical staff
