Job Summary
To manage on a day‑to‑day basis the Trust Medical Appraisal and Revalidation processes for non‑training grade medical staff and to support the Responsible Officer and Clinical Lead for Medical Appraisal and Revalidation in delivering the requirements of the GMC Revalidation Regulations (2012).
Responsibilities
- Support the Responsible Officer and Clinical Lead in driving the development and quality of medical appraisal and Trust requirements in respect of revalidation.
- Develop policies and procedures in line with local and national requirements.
- Arrange and facilitate the Trust medical appraiser network and training sessions and deliver training as required.
- Act as the point of contact for appraisal and revalidation enquiries, liaising with the Medical Director, Divisional Directors, Clinical Directors, individual doctors and the GMC.
- Oversee the allocation of appraisers and appraisees in line with Trust Policy and implement a dispute process when necessary.
- Maintain the GMC Connect system to ensure the list of doctors with a prescribed connection to the Trust is accurate.
- Dra i an annual revalidation and appraisal report for the Trust Board of Directors and complete required NHSE reports (quarterly and annual audits and self‑assessments).
- Attend the quarterly Responsible Officer Network and Regional Appraisal Leads Network meetings.
- Manage the revalidation and appraisal e‑portfolio system, liaise with the contractor on system changes, provide training to staff and coordinate tendering processes for new systems as required.
- Provide accurate and timely reports to Clinical Directors and Divisional Directors regarding appraisal compliance.
- Ensure all doctors with a prescribed connection to the Trust receive timely and accurate guidance on revalidation requirements, providing support where necessary.
- Draft correspondence to all non‑training grade doctors regarding revalidation and appraisal.
- Continuously monitor the appraisal system, identify development areas and produce plans to improve quality.
- Provide and present complex data on request and draft reports supporting good practice and quality of Medical Appraisal and Revalidation processes within the Trust.
- Serve as the first‑line manager of the Appraisal and Revalidation Administrator.
- Act as the authorised signatory for the revalidation budget.
Qualifications – Essential
- English and Maths GCSE grade 9–2 (A*–E) or equivalent.
- Willingness to undertake additional training as required.
Qualifications – Desirable
- Evidence of continued professional development.
Knowledge, Experience & Expertise – Essential
- Specialist, expert level knowledge of medical revalidation, appraisal and governance.
- Experience drafting correspondence and reports.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and experience using TEAMS for meetings and live events.
- Experience managing change.
- Ability to work autonomously, prioritise workload and act on own initiative.
- Ability to recognise and address problems as they arise and identify when escalation is required.
- Flexible approach to work and working hours.
Communication and Relationships (Including Management Responsibilities) – Essential
- Experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds within a complex organisation.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrating assertiveness with medical professionals and senior staff.
- Confidence presenting effectively in front of large groups.
- Ability to maintain a professional manner in interactions with colleagues.
- Experience line‑managing staff.
- Good working knowledge of performance management.
