Job Description

Role can be Hybrid or Remote Subject to Location

NEC Digital seeks a Front-end React Developer. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining web applications utilising React and Next.js, with a focus on delivering secure solutions as cloud SaaS or on-premises as required. The role demands collaboration within a skilled cross‑functional Scrum team to implement new features, enhance existing functionality, and ensure adherence to accessibility, performance, and test quality standards. SC clearance is mandatory for this position.

  • Implement features that meet acceptance criteria using React and Next.js.
  • Write production‑ready code with automated tests, accessibility checks, performance profiling, and robust error and loading states.
  • Perform code reviews and give clear, actionable feedback within Git workflows.
  • Integrate REST APIs, manage state, ensure data integrity, and document changes for reuse.
  • Build and maintain reusable components and front‑end libraries aligned to the design system.
  • Translate designs into accessible, performant UI and validate technical feasibility early.
  • Optimise rendering, bundle size, and caching for speed and scalability across devices and browsers.
  • Collaborate with product, design, QA, and back end to deliver small, reversible increments.
  • Contribute to architecture and front‑end best practices.
  • Track emerging web standards and tools and propose improvements.
Essential skills and experience
  • Professional, commercial front‑end development experience.
  • Strong React and TypeScript skills, including component composition, hooks, and disciplined use of static typing.
  • Experience with modern form and validation libraries, for example React Hook Form, and good patterns for managing form state.
  • Practical experience with Next.js routing, core SSR concepts, and deploying Next.js applications.
  • Good working knowledge of test‑driven development (TDD), including the red, green, refactor cycle, component and integration tests, effective use of test doubles and mocks, and fast, deterministic suites.
  • Confident writing automated tests with Jest and React Testing Library.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility, including semantic HTML, WCAG 2.2 AA, and working with the GOV.UK Design System.
  • Experience consuming APIs and handling structured data, ideally with exposure to enterprise platforms or OData.
Desirable skills
  • Component libraries, experience with design systems and contributing components.
  • Familiarity with data modelling concepts and relational basics.
  • TanStack Query or similar data‑fetching libraries.
  • End‑to‑end testing with Cypress or Playwright.
  • SnapLogic familiarity is helpful but not required.
  • Storybook for UI documentation and visual reviews.
  • Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, and Visual Studio Code.
  • Figma for design collaboration and handoff, Mural for collaborative workshops.
  • Knowledge of web performance optimisation techniques.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
Personal skills
  • Clear and concise communication, both written and verbal.
  • Ownership and accountability to see work through to production.
  • Pragmatic problem‑solving and prioritisation.
  • Constructive challenges and effectively give and receive feedback.
  • Advocates Agile Scrum ways of working and commits to Sprint Goals.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross‑functional team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high‑quality code.
  • Proactive approach to learning and staying updated with the latest front‑end technologies and best practices.
Security clearance and eligibility
  • Active UK Security Check (SC) required to start.
  • Candidates must meet residency requirements for SC transfer.
