Essential Duties and Responsibilities

As a Project Engineer working from our St Neots facility, you'll be responsible for organising and managing product approvals, testing, and qualification of Gates hose and coupling products for both internal and external customers. You'll support product development through technical testing, crimp data creation, and documentation, ensuring robust standards are met across global markets. Working cross-functionally with operations, quality, and commercial teams, you'll help drive engineering excellence and support customer needs worldwide.

Key Responsibilities
  • Organise and coordinate internal and external product approvals and special testing programmes.
  • Qualify internal and external coupling ranges on Gates hose products.
  • Analyse test results, prepare reports, and issue documentation to customers.
  • Support the creation of new parts and drawings, including checking and approval sign-off.
  • Provide assistance in the design and development of new products and iterations of existing designs.
  • Create crimp data through trials and manufacture test samples for validation in Gates Fluid Power Test Labs.
  • Issue crimp data for production and the distribution market, maintaining the internal production crimp database.
  • Promote and develop business processes and procedures locally and globally.
  • Support the development of BSI standards and represent Gates at British Fluid Power Association (BFPA) meetings when required.
Keys to Success
  • Builds a broad understanding of related engineering disciplines and works effectively as part of multidisciplinary teams.
  • Applies best practices and understands how their area of expertise connects with and supports other functions across the business.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This role has no direct line management responsibility but may provide technical guidance and direction to technicians, test engineers, and cross-functional team members as part of project delivery.
  • Responsible for coordinating tasks, ensuring testing and approvals are completed to specification, and maintaining project timelines.
  • May act as a key liaison between operations, quality, applications engineering, and external customers during product qualification and approval activities.
Requirements and Preferred Skills
  • 5-7 years of experience.
  • Degree or HNC in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) with relevant experience.
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office.
  • Flexibility to travel within the UK and abroad.
  • Focused, self‑motivated, and enthusiastic about technical problem‑solving.
  • Proven planning and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise.
  • Excellent attention to detail and foresight to identify potential issues.
  • Knowledge of fluid power products would be an advantage.
  • CAD experience desirable but not essential.
