Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer - Overhead Lines (OHL) to lead technically challenging OHL design projects within our Transmission & Distribution team. This senior role focuses on delivering high-voltage infrastructure by guiding engineering outputs, client engagement, and compliance with global standards.

You will perform PLS-CADD modelling, line routing, structural analyses, sag-tension calculations, and feasibility studies for programmes such as National Grid upgrades.

Qualifications

• Professionally qualified CEng Chartered Engineer with a recognized electrical engineering institution (e.g. the IET).
• A bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent technical discipline, electrical engineering or power engineering.
• Experience delivering projects for transmission system operators such as National Grid, SSE and SPT in line with each operator’s standards. CDAE accreditation is highly advantageous.
• Project experience in overhead line engineering (ideally up to 400kV).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead and engage with clients to deliver technically challenging OHL design projects.
• Be involved in large programmes like National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade.
• Write proposals outlining timeline, resources, budget, objectives, and goals.
• Provide technical support throughout project implementation, planning and public consultation.
• Handle design activities related to overhead lines including PLS-CADD modelling, line routing, structural analysis, sag-tension calculations, insulator/conductor selection.
• Lead feasibility studies and conductor thermal ratings, ensuring compliance with standards.
• Conduct studies to identify technically preferred solutions for client presentation.
• Originate and check engineering deliverables: complex designs, reports, proposals, drawings.
• Perform internal quality checks of drawings and calculations.
• Mentor and develop capability within cable systems engineering team.
• Support business development: proposals, bid reviews, client presentations.
