Job summary

AECOM in London is seeking a Principal OHL Engineer to lead and deliver technically challenging overhead line design projects up to 400kV. You will work within the Transmission & Distribution team to engage with clients, develop design strategies and manage deliverables across feasibility, routing, and performance analysis.

The role requires Chartered Engineer status, solid experience with OHL projects and strong communication.

Qualifications

CEng Chartered Engineer with a recognised electrical engineering institution (e.g. IET).
A bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent technical discipline, electrical or power engineering.
Experience delivering projects for transmission system operators such as National Grid, SSE and SPT, aligned to operator standards.
Project experience in overhead line engineering (ideally up to 400kV).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

Lead and engage with clients to deliver technically challenging OHL design projects.
Provide project technical support and design of transmission projects up to 400kV.
Support large programmes like GGP projects; outline timeline, resources, budget, objectives, and goals.
Provide technical input during project implementation, planning and public consultations.
Design activities including PLS-CADD modelling, line routing, structural analysis and loading trees, sag‑tension, insulator/conductor selection.
Conduct feasibility studies, conductor thermal ratings, and ensure regulatory compliance.
Identify technically preferred solution/layout to present to the client.
Originate and check engineering deliverables such as complex designs, reports, proposals, drawings.
Perform internal quality checks of engineering drawings and calculations.
