Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer – Overhead Lines (OHL) to lead high‑voltage design projects within the Transmission & Distribution team. You will act as a trusted advisor to clients, developing technical standards and steering feasibility studies for major infrastructure schemes, including involvement in the Great Grid Upgrade.

This senior role requires strong technical excellence, strategic thinking, and the ability to mentor a growing team while supporting business development

Qualifications

• CEng Chartered Engineer with a recognized electrical engineering institution (e.g. IET).
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent technical discipline.
• Experience delivering projects for transmission system operators such as National Grid, SSE and SPT in line with each operator’s standards. CDAE accreditation is highly advantageous.
• Project experience in overhead line engineering (ideally up to 400kV).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Be involved in large programmes of work like National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade project.
• Write proposals outlining timeline, resources, budget, objectives and goals.
• Provide technical support throughout project implementation, planning and public consultations.
• Lead design activities related to overhead lines, including PLS-CADD modelling and detailed analyses.
• Lead feasibility studies and ensure compliance with industry standards.
• Originate and check engineering deliverables such as complex designs and drawings.
• Mentor colleagues and support capability growth in cable systems engineering.
• Support business development activities including proposals and client presentations.
