We are seeking a Principal Design Engineer to join the BAM UK & Ireland Temporary Works Centre of Expertise. The Temporary Works Centre of Expertise provides design and technical support to the whole of BAM UK & Ireland, so our work covers a wide range of engineering applications.

Our focus is on delivering safe, practical, economical, and sustainable designs, and you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of applications, including earthworks, earth retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, timber, and formwork / falsework.

This role will be based at our Farnborough office, with a hybrid working schedule.

This role will be based at our Farnborough office, with a hybrid working schedule.

Making Possible

Representing the Temporary Works CoE when necessary at internal and external meetings.

Carrying out Matrix Management duties and Performance and Development Reviews when required and identify appropriate development activities for matrix reports.

Liaising with and advising other departments and project teams within the Company with respect to design requirements.

Being the key point of contact when appointed as Supervising / Lead Designer (or equivalent) on specific projects / bids.

Arranging and undertaking site visits when appropriate.

Supervising others working on tasks within informal teams, whilst maintaining responsibility for the teams overall performance.

The work carried out in the department is in accordance with Divisional / Segment procedures and that a high level of professionalism is maintained.

All chargeable work is identified and charges can be recovered through the accurate recording and timely submission of timesheets / allocations by yourself and others under your supervision.

Ensuring that feedback on design work is obtained, reviewed, collated and saved in accordance with departmental procedures, highlighting areas where improvements are required.

Preparing / supervising the development of conceptual designs with a view to ensuring safe, practical and economic designs in accordance with current standards.

Preparing / supervising the development of detailed designs in accordance with current standards and codes including calculations, design risk assessments and sufficiently detailed sketches for the preparation of 3D models and working drawings.

Checking / reviewing the design work of other staff members and external designers in accordance with departmental procedures.

Summarising quantities relating to design tasks and prepare for pricing purposes when required.

Ensuring that the design task database is maintained with up-to-date and relevant data for all tasks assigned to you, and under your supervision.

Taking a proactive approach to training and continuing professional development of yourself and others.

Supporting the identification of areas where improvements to departmental processes.

Supporting the delivery of training for TWC, ATWE and Supervisors training programme courses.

What do you bring to the role?

Proven experience and expertise in civil engineering design structures, which may include earthworks, earth retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, faade retention, reinforced concrete, timber and formwork / falsework.

Proven experience in construction methods and processes.

Degree in Civil Engineering or a related subject.

Experience and knowledge of digital construction processes.

Chartered membership of ICE and / or IStructE or an accepted alternative professional institution or demonstrable experience and responsibility at a level at least equivalent to a Chartered Engineer.

The following are desirable requirements :
  • Construction site / project experience.
  • Familiarity with modern methods of construction (e.g., DfMA etc.).
  • To be able to manage a team.
