Job summary

Royal Mail Group in Rye is seeking a Delivery Officer for a fixed-term 12‑month contract. The role involves sorting letters and parcels, delivering by van and on foot, and building strong relationships with customers.

You will work on a rotating schedule, outdoors in all weather, with 35 hours per week and some weekend shifts across 8:00–16:30. Training is provided and overtime is paid.

Job description

Location: Rye Delivery Office, TN31 7AA

Job type: Fixed Term contract (12 months)

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available. Working hours: 35:00 hours per week - working 5days in 7 across Monday - Sunday - 08:00/16:30*

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand. You’ll be required to work Sundays at Ashford Delivery Office.

What to expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

  • Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
  • Driving a Royal Mail van daily
  • Working in all weather conditions
  • Delivering letters and high volumes of parcels
  • Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods
About you

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

  • A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
  • Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
  • Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
  • Reliable and self-motivated
  • Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
  • Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
  • Comfortable working outdoors and independently
