Job summary

Royal Mail in St Helens is hiring a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) on a fixed-term 9-month contract. You will work 37 hours per week on rotating shifts, 5 days in 7, 8am-3pm or 12pm-8pm, with Sundays on a rota.

You will sort letters and parcels, deliver by van and on foot in your local area, build relationships with customers, and work outdoors in all weather. Full training provided, plus benefits and overtime opportunities.

Qualifications

• Full manual UK driving licence (minimum 6 penalty points) and willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily.
• Physically fit and able to walk long distances, climb stairs/hills, and lift/carry 10kg+ mailbags.
• Reliable, self-motivated, with strong organisation and customer-focused approach.

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.

Working hours: 37:00 hours per week – working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday – 8am-3pm or 12pm-8pm*

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

You’ll be required to work Sundays 10:30am-4:30pm on a rota basis.

What To Expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily
• Working in all weather conditions

• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About You

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
