Job summary

Royal Mail in Houghton Le Spring is recruiting a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) on a fixed term contract for 12 months. You will sort letters and parcels, deliver by van and on foot, and build relationships with customers in your local area.

The role is outdoor, weather‑dependent and involves rotating shifts with some weekend work. A full manual UK driving licence (max 6 penalty points) is required, along with the ability to pass a driving assessment.

Location: Houghton Le Spring Delivery Office, DH4 5EL

Job type: Fixed Term contract (12 months)

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.

Working hours: 30:00 hours per week - working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday - 08:55 - 15:30/15:00 - 21:00*

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

You’ll be required to work Sundays at Houghton Le Spring Delivery Office.

What To Expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily
• Working in all weather conditions
• Delivering letters and high volumes of parcels
• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About You

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
