Job summary

A leading healthcare provider in Manchester is seeking porters to provide essential transport services for patients and materials within the trust. Responsibilities include transferring patients, handling clinical waste, and ensuring the safe delivery of medical products. This permanent role offers a 37.5-hour work week, Monday to Friday, from 12:00 to 20:00, contributing to a first-class patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Transfer all patients throughout the trust estate in a prompt, professional and efficient manner using appropriate means of transport.
  • Collect, transport and dispose of waste materials including clinical waste from wards and theatres.
  • Collect specimens from wards/depts and deliver to the laboratories in a prompt manner.
  • Collect and transport blood products from the blood room to wards/depts.
  • Maintain respect and dignity when moving deceased patients.
  • Assist clinical colleagues during cardiac arrests.
  • Move furniture and deliver clean linen while collecting dirty linen.
Job description
Overview

The portering department transfers patients, goods and any other items around the trust in a prompt, professional and efficient manner. Porters respond to requests for their services as quickly as possible in order to provide a positive patient experience in a safe professional manner and first-class service that epitomises the Christie reputation.

This is a permanent contract of 37.5 hours per week. This will be Mon-Fri 12:00-20:00.

Responsibilities
  • Transfer all patients throughout the trust estate in a prompt, professional and efficient manner using appropriate means of transport and the portering management software TeleTracking.
  • Collect, transport and dispose of waste materials including clinical waste from wards and theatres, following Trust guidelines on waste management at all times.
  • Collect specimens from wards/depts and delivery to the laboratories in a prompt, professional and efficient manner using TeleTracking – training will be provided.
  • Collect and transport blood products from the blood room and deliver to wards/depts in a prompt, professional and efficient manner as per training and procedures.
  • Collect and transport patients from all areas of the site using wheeled equipment (e.g., wheelchairs, trollies, beds).
  • Move deceased patients from the wards/depts to the Mortuary maintaining respect and dignity.
  • Carry the emergency Alertive/Allocate response device as part of the trust cardiac arrest team and ensure equipment is available as soon as possible; assist clinical colleagues as required.
  • Move furniture and similar items around the trust; deliver clean linen and collect dirty linen; remove waste furniture and electrical items for disposal.
  • Provide safe delivery, storage and correct segregation of full/empty medical gas cylinders.
  • Move clinical equipment (e.g., pumps) to and from wards/departments as required; move beds and mattresses to/from wards/departments and the bed store.
  • Deliver items from Stores to wards/departments and deliver drugs from Pharmacy to wards/depts in a prompt, professional and efficient manner, ensuring drugs are handed to ward/dept staff.
