Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a -month secondment, as a pleural nurse specialist in the Respiratory Intervention team, based in main theatres at the John Radcliffe.

The successful candidate will work with the pleural team and will be required to provide a specialist nursing service for patients with pleural conditions. They will contribute to the care of patients requiring pleural procedures including chest drains, thoracoscopy and pleural aspirations. They will work closely with the pleural consultant, fellows and current pleural nurse to provide an effective and responsive service to patients. They will provide education, advice and support to patients and their relatives / carers, both in the hospital setting and, in the community.

Main duties of the job
  • Working clinically on pleural and occasional bronchoscopy lists
  • Responding to calls and messages on the pleural phone, triaging patients, giving advice and escalating to doctors if / when required
  • Allocate pleural referrals from intervention email onto appropriate lists
  • Liaise with GP’s, district nurses, community hospitals, hospices and other services
  • Complete IPC referrals and liaise with GP surgery / district nurses regarding drainage
  • Prepare pleural spreadsheet ready for pleural MDT on Wednesday
  • Attend and contribute to the MDT
  • Assist pleural doctors with procedures outside of JR theatres in Churchill, in Osler procedure room
  • Management of pleural equipment including liaising with departments internally and companies externally
  • After training, review IPC patients within the hospital (across site)
  • Respond to pleural emails and EPR messages
  • Conduct teaching sessions regarding chest drain management etc
