Job summary

Huddersfield Grammar School is seeking a practical Maintenance Operative (Caretaker) to help keep our campus safe, welcoming and well‑maintained. The role covers opening/locking, routine repairs, safety checks and supporting events outside core hours.

The ideal candidate has hands‑on maintenance or facilities experience, a Full UK Driving Licence and the ability to work independently while communicating effectively with staff and contractors.

Qualifications

• Experience in a maintenance, caretaker, facilities or grounds maintenance role.
• Full UK Driving Licence is required.
• Practical skills in plumbing, decorating, joinery, electrical work or general repairs preferred.
• Self-motivated, organised and able to work independently.
• Good communication and problem-solving skills."

Responsibilities

• Open and secure the school site and buildings.
• Carry out routine maintenance, minor repairs and general upkeep tasks.
• Conduct regular site security, health and safety and compliance checks.
• Set and monitor alarm systems and respond to security concerns.
• Maintain a safe, clean and welcoming environment across the grounds.
• Support school events, lettings and activities outside core hours when required.
• Report maintenance issues and assist with planned preventative maintenance.
• Collaborate with colleagues and contractors to maintain high site standards.
