Job summary

Huddersfield Grammar School is seeking a proactive Maintenance Operative (Caretaker) to help keep the school safe, secure and well‑maintained. The role is part-time (22.5 hours/week) with a fixed-term contract until August 2027.

The position requires practical maintenance skills, a Full UK Driving Licence, and the ability to work independently, with responsibilities spanning site openings, routine repairs, security checks, and support for events outside core hours.

Qualifications

• Experience in a maintenance, caretaker, facilities, or grounds role.
• Full UK Driving Licence.
• Practical skills in plumbing, decorating, joinery, electrical work, or general repairs.
• Self-motivated, organised, and able to work independently.
• Good communication and problem-solving skills.
• Willing to develop new skills and undertake training.
• Ability to manage competing priorities and respond to unexpected challenges.

Responsibilities

• Opening and securing the school site and buildings.
• Carrying out routine maintenance, minor repairs, and general upkeep tasks.
• Conducting regular site security, health and safety, and compliance checks.
• Setting and monitoring alarm systems and responding to security concerns.
• Maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment across the school grounds.
• Supporting school events, lettings, and activities outside core hours when required.
• Reporting maintenance issues and assisting with planned preventative maintenance.
• Working collaboratively with colleagues and contractors to maintain high standards across the site.
