Job summary

Huddersfield Grammar School is seeking a Maintenance Operative (Caretaker) to manage opening/closing, repairs, and site security. The role covers maintenance, health and safety checks, and supporting events to keep the site safe and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors.

The successful candidate will have practical maintenance skills, a driving licence, and the ability to work independently with good communication. The role is part-time on-site under a fixed-term contract until August 2027.

Qualifications

• Experience in a maintenance, caretaker, facilities, trades, or grounds maintenance role.
• Hold a Full UK Driving Licence.
• Possess practical skills in plumbing, decorating, joinery, electrical work, or general repairs.
• Are self-motivated, organised, and able to work independently. Have good communication and problem-solving skills.
• Take pride in maintaining safe and high-quality environments.
• Can manage competing priorities and respond to challenges.
• Willing to develop new skills and undertake relevant training.
• IWFM Level 2, IOSH, First Aid at Work, Fire Marshal, or other Health & Safety qualifications.
• Experience working within a school, education, or similar environment.
• Facilities management or grounds maintenance experience.

Responsibilities

• Opening and securing the school site and buildings.
• Carrying out routine maintenance, minor repairs, and general upkeep tasks.
• Conducting regular site security, health and safety, and compliance checks.
• Setting and monitoring alarm systems and responding to security concerns.
• Maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment across the school grounds.
• Supporting school events, lettings, and activities outside core hours when required.
• Reporting maintenance issues and assisting with planned preventative maintenance.
• Working collaboratively with colleagues and contractors to maintain high standards across the site.
