Job summary

Huddersfield Grammar School is seeking a hands-on Maintenance Operative (Caretaker) to keep our campus safe, welcoming and well maintained.

This part-time, fixed-term role offers 22.5 hours per week with a salary up to £13,200.85 per annum, dependent on experience, and runs until August 2027. Responsibilities include opening and securing the site, routine maintenance, health and safety checks, alarms, and supporting events.

Qualifications

• Experience in maintenance, caretaker, facilities, or grounds roles.
• Hold a Full UK Driving Licence.
• Practical skills in plumbing, decorating, joinery, electrical work, or general repairs.
• Self-motivated, organised, and able to work independently with good communication.
• Ability to prioritise tasks and respond to unexpected challenges.
• Willing to undertake relevant training.

Responsibilities

• Open and secure the school site and buildings.
• Carry out routine maintenance, minor repairs, and general upkeep tasks.
• Conduct regular site security, health and safety, and compliance checks.
• Set and monitor alarm systems and respond to security concerns.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment across the grounds.
• Support school events, lettings, and activities outside core hours when required.
• Report maintenance issues and assist with planned preventative maintenance.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues and contractors to maintain high standards across the site.
