Role purpose and overview

Publishers ensure that Telegraph content is of the highest quality. You will sub‑edit and build articles across News, World and Comment, interrogating copy and ensuring it is tight and accurate, and optimise pieces for audience, platforms and search.

Working in a fast‑moving and often pressurised environment, you will be capable of publishing numerous articles a day with accuracy and flair. You will use video, pictures and graphics creatively to make articles visually engaging and should be able to write strong headlines.

When required, publishers sub, build and send newsletters, develop simple visuals, and run live blogs. The role also involves acting up on the rota as required.

This role will report into the News Chief Sub.

Key responsibilities
  • Sub copy to ensure it is accurate, clear and conforms to house style.
  • Proactively raise questions and flag errors with senior publishers and commissioners.
  • Ensure headlines and furniture are sharp and digital friendly.
  • Make use of the best video, pictures and other visual assets.
  • Follow direction of Head of Publishing and Lead Publishers to ensure priorities and deadlines are met and that content is optimised for a digital audience.
  • Support Lead and Senior Publishers in challenging and collaborating with commissioners.
  • Have an understanding of performance data to learn what works best for a digital audience.
  • Work with SEO to ensure articles perform across search.
  • Execute and follow plans set for longer‑term series and special projects.
  • Publish breaking news stories quickly and accurately.
  • Source data to commission graphics and illustrations when required.
  • Generate creative solutions to presenting, publishing and promoting content online (e.g. social collabs, app sells, newsletters etc.) when required.
  • Sub, build and send department newsletters when required.
  • Run live blogs when required.
Key skills
  • Experience sub‑editing stories for digital platforms.
  • Experience of working in News.
  • Quick, accurate subbing and writing of headlines.
  • Digital publishing skills including knowledge of visual storytelling and a brilliant eye for photography as well as creative flair for info boxes, polls, graphics, etc.
  • Enthusiasm and imagination for presenting stories digitally.
  • Able to respond well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Understanding of SEO and promotion platforms.
  • Familiarity with using content management systems for digital publishing.
  • Strong news sense and judgment.
