Job description

  • Exciting Music Teacher vacancy at a secondary school in Cambridge.

  • Opportunity to teach practical and theoretical Music across KS3 and KS4.

  • Join a school committed to creative education and student participation.

  • Suitable for experienced teachers and qualified Early Career Teachers.

Our client is seeking a passionate and talented Music Teacher to join a secondary school in Cambridge. The successful candidate will play an important role in helping students develop their musical abilities, explore a range of musical traditions and gain confidence in expressing themselves through performance and composition.

This is an excellent opportunity for a teacher who believes that Music should be an engaging, inclusive and practical subject. The school is looking for someone who can deliver lessons that combine musical theory with opportunities for students to listen, analyse, compose and perform. The successful applicant should be able to explain technical concepts clearly while encouraging students to experiment, collaborate and develop their own musical ideas.

The role involves teaching across KS3 and KS4, supporting students as they progress from foundational musical skills towards more advanced understanding and, where applicable, examination preparation. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain high academic expectations while ensuring that lessons remain accessible and enjoyable for students with different levels of prior musical experience.

The department is keen to appoint someone who can motivate learners, use a variety of teaching strategies and contribute positively to the school's wider creative provision. Applications are welcome from experienced Music Teachers and ECTs who are enthusiastic about developing their careers in a supportive educational environment.

About the School:

The school is based in Cambridge and is committed to providing students with a well-rounded education that supports academic progress, personal growth and creative expression. The school recognises the importance of the arts in helping young people develop communication skills, discipline, resilience and confidence.

The Music department aims to create a positive environment in which students can develop their musical interests and gain practical experience. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver a structured curriculum that builds knowledge progressively while encouraging students to take an active role in their learning.

Music lessons provide opportunities to develop listening skills, understand musical notation, explore composition techniques and appreciate the contribution of music across different cultures and historical periods. The successful teacher will be able to make these areas relevant to students while maintaining a clear focus on curriculum objectives.

The school values collaboration between colleagues and encourages teachers to share ideas that improve engagement and achievement. There may also be opportunities to support concerts, instrumental performances, school productions or other extracurricular activities, depending on the school's provision and the candidate's interests.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver Music lessons across KS3 and KS4 in line with curriculum expectations and relevant examination specifications.

  • Plan lessons that develop students' practical musicianship, theoretical knowledge and listening skills.

  • Teach musical elements such as rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, structure and notation.

  • Encourage students to explore a range of genres, composers, performers and cultural musical traditions.

  • Develop composition tasks that allow students to experiment with musical ideas and apply their understanding creatively.

  • Support individual and group performances, helping students develop confidence and improve technique.

  • Use appropriate instruments, digital music technology and classroom resources to support learning.

  • Differentiate activities to meet the needs of students with different abilities and levels of musical experience.

  • Assess student work and provide specific feedback that supports improvement.

  • Maintain clear classroom expectations and promote positive collaboration during practical activities.

  • Contribute to curriculum development and the sharing of resources within the department.

  • Encourage participation in musical enrichment opportunities and the wider school community where appropriate.

Experience and Qualifications:
  • A recognised teaching qualification, such as QTS or a PGCE, or an equivalent accepted qualification.

  • The ability to teach Music across KS3 and KS4.

  • Strong subject knowledge covering both practical and theoretical aspects of Music.

  • The ability to deliver engaging lessons that develop creativity and academic understanding.

  • Good classroom management and the ability to establish positive relationships with students.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to plan a coherent programme of learning.

  • A commitment to inclusive education, student wellbeing and safeguarding.

  • Enthusiasm for supporting performances and extracurricular activities where appropriate.

  • The legal right to work in the UK.

Why This Role Could Be Right for You:
