Job summary

The Nottingham Building Society is seeking a Head of Mortgage Underwriting in Nottingham. This hybrid role combines strategic leadership with hands-on oversight of mortgage origination and underwriting operations.

The position involves guiding teams, maintaining high underwriting standards and driving continuous process improvements. Hybrid working 2 days per week, full-time hours, with a competitive salary and car allowance.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience across mortgage origination, underwriting and portfolio management.
• Strong understanding of responsible lending and mortgage operations.
• In-depth knowledge of relevant regulatory frameworks (MCOB, FCA requirements, financial crime controls).
• Proven experience leading high-performing operational teams and coaching colleagues to reach their potential.
• Strong analytical skills to interpret MI, KPIs and performance data.
• Experience in operational resilience, business continuity, risk management.
• Track record delivering change, transformation and continuous improvement.
• Outstanding stakeholder management and ability to influence senior leaders and regulators.
• Excellent communication and leadership in high-pressure situations.

Responsibilities

• Shape and deliver the Mortgage Origination and Underwriting strategy.
• Lead, motivate and develop high-performing teams.
• Maintain robust underwriting standards and oversight.
• Drive operational efficiency across mortgage journeys and processes.
• Use data, feedback and performance insights to identify trends and improve customer outcomes.
• Lead change initiatives and transformation programmes.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and strong governance controls.
• Build strong relationships with brokers, solicitors, valuation partners and risk/compliance teams.
• Oversee third-party suppliers and outsourced services.
