Job description

The post has been created to support delivery of the paediatric trauma and elective workload, including activity related to the Major Trauma Centre (MTC).

The service is seeking to appoint a locum Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon with experience across the breadth of paediatric orthopaedics, to complement the existing team and meet increasing clinical demand. The post holder will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision of trainees, and multidisciplinary service development within the orthopaedic department.

The post holder will be expected to join the 1:12 consultant of the week rota on the SMH site and associated on call rota and participate in the Major Trauma ward consultant of the week.

The purpose of this 10‑PA locum consultant post is to provide high‑quality clinical care within the Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery service, supporting both elective and trauma activity. The post holder will deliver outpatient clinics, theatre sessions, multidisciplinary team input, and trauma care, including support to the Major Trauma Centre.

The successful applicant will have a specialist interest and experience in general paediatric orthopaedics (specific sub‑interests can be accommodated depending on service need). They will contribute to training and education of medical students, junior doctors, and allied health professionals.

Key Result Areas, Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide high quality care to patients in Orthopaedics, Trauma and Major Trauma Surgery.
  • Research, teaching and training
    • To provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Director/Chief of Service.
    • To act as educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Clinical Director/Head of Specialty to ensure external accreditation of training posts.
    • To collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust’s translational research portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.
    • To attend and participate at Trust Grand Rounds, lectures and courses for trainees in other surgical specialties within the Trust.
    • To participate in sector-wide postgraduate Orthopaedic surgery teaching.
  • Develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
  • Ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care programmed activities.
  • Ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and respond to their views.
Qualifications

The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration.
