Job description

Teaching Personnel is seeking a dedicated, resilient and compassionate Learning Mentor to support pupils within an alternative provision setting in Wigan.

The provision supports children and young people who may experience barriers to mainstream education, including social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, behavioural difficulties, disengagement from learning and challenges with attendance.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping young people overcome barriers, develop positive relationships and re-engage with education in a supportive and structured environment.

The successful candidate will work closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams to provide tailored support, encourage positive behaviour and help pupils develop the confidence, resilience and life skills needed to succeed.

  • Provide one-to-one mentoring and targeted support to pupils who require additional emotional, behavioural or educational guidance.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement, motivation and confidence.
  • Support pupils with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour and difficulties accessing mainstream education.
  • Help manage behaviour positively, using consistent strategies to promote emotional regulation and self-control.
  • Encourage attendance, participation and engagement in lessons and learning activities.
  • Support pupils in developing social skills, independence, resilience and positive attitudes towards learning.
  • Deliver small-group activities and interventions to address individual needs.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour, attendance and wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, parents, carers and external professionals.
  • Follow safeguarding procedures and contribute to creating a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Support pupils with transitions, reintegration and preparation for their next steps in education.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people in an educational, pastoral or support setting.
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs, behavioural difficulties or barriers to learning.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • A calm, patient and consistent approach to managing challenging situations.
  • The ability to motivate and engage pupils who may be reluctant to participate in education.
  • A good understanding of safeguarding, child protection and professional boundaries.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a wider team.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records.

A relevant Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in education, childcare, youth work or supporting teaching and learning would be advantageous.

Experience within alternative provision, pupil referral units (PRUs), behaviour support or specialist education settings would also be beneficial.

  • Opportunities to make a meaningful difference to the lives of young people.
  • Support from a dedicated education recruitment consultant.
  • Opportunities to develop your experience within alternative provision and pastoral support.
  • Access to relevant training and professional development opportunities, subject to availability.
