Who are you looking for?

We are seeking a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual with the ability, knowledge, and expertise to lead a team of Housing Advice Officers. This team provides information, advice, advocacy, case work, and consultancy services to individuals and agencies throughout the Wakefield area.

What will be expected from me?

The role involves exercising the authority's duties and powers concerning landlord and tenant issues, including The Protection from Eviction Act 1977, The Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, and Renters Reform Act 2025. Responsibilities include participating in and overseeing investigations to ensure legislative compliance. A thorough knowledge of these legislations is required.

This challenging yet rewarding role is suited for someone experienced in working with vulnerable clients and complex legislation. The successful candidate will be a motivational team leader with excellent organizational, communication, and performance management skills to meet statutory housing legislation requirements and customer needs.

What might I be doing?

  • Managing and leading a team of Housing Advice Officers to proactively prevent homelessness and address housing needs, ensuring adherence to local and corporate procedures, policies, and guidelines.
  • Managing the Housing Advice Service to ensure the Council meets its statutory responsibilities related to landlord and tenant relationships, including conducting and overseeing investigations to ensure compliance with legislation such as the Protection From Eviction Act 1977, Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, Rent Act 1977, Housing Act 1988, Renters Rights Act 2025, among others. This includes conducting interviews under caution.
  • Monitoring and reviewing housing advice casework to ensure advice accuracy, currency, and compliance with legislation, guidance, case law, and policies. Ensuring case records are accurate, updated promptly, and targets are met.

Essential requirements:

  • Level 4 of the Qualifications and Credit Framework or significant relevant work-based experience.
  • Substantial knowledge of housing law, welfare rights, and landlord and tenant law, including the Protection from Eviction Act 1977 and Renters Rights Act 2025.
  • Understanding of housing and support needs of homeless and vulnerable individuals.
  • Extensive experience working with vulnerable clients.
  • Experience working within legislative frameworks and advising on complex matters.

What can I expect?

  • A full-time position of 37 hours per week, with a flexible mix of office and homeworking.
  • Support and ongoing training opportunities.
  • Discounted and subsidized public transport options.
  • The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).
  • A range of benefits, including discounted leisure facility memberships, free 12-week exercise programs with personal trainers, retail and entertainment discounts, cycle-to-work schemes, and more.
