The University Hospitals of Leicester are recruiting full‑time Healthcare Security Officers to join the busy team based at the University Hospitals of Leicester. If you enjoy working with people, have a healthcare background, and wish to make a difference at UHL, please consider a role in the healthcare security officer sector. We are seeking security officers with a caring nature, capable of managing altered behaviours and de‑escalating agitated individuals. The hours of work are 12‑hour shift patterns days and nights; you will be required to work across the 3 sites: Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital. Full training will be provided. We welcome applications from experienced security officers and the healthcare sector.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a security presence throughout all areas of the hospital providing a polite, efficient and compassionate service to patients, visitors and staff at all times.
  • Record all security incidents and complete all appropriate documentation by means of computer and/or written paperwork.
  • Ensure consistently high standards of customer service, including extensive communication with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Respond to challenging or traumatic security incidents, including monitoring CCTV and complying with data protection regulations.
  • De‑escalate agitated individuals and handle altered behaviour situations.
  • Provide a first‑line quick and immediate response to distressed, violent and aggressive persons (including mental health patients) within the hospital, calming individuals using verbal and non‑verbal communication skills, and where necessary physically restraining and escorting persons from the site to maintain a safe environment.
  • Assist or detain patients against their will at the request of and under the guidance of clinical personnel, where appropriate from a legal and patient safety perspective.
  • Arming and disarming intruder alarms, monitoring and reporting critical and medical alarms, and alerting relevant staff to emergency situations as required. Take a leading role in fire alarm procedures.
  • Use physical effort as needed during a shift, with an emphasis on safety, and adapt quickly between enforcement and empathy according to the situation.
  • Monitor CCTV in compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and UHL policy.
  • Act as a first line to distress and violence situations and escort patients out of the site if necessary.
Key Working Relationships
  • Internal relationships with other security officers and administrative staff.
  • Internal relationships with staff using the hospital facilities, including departmental managers and ward‑based staff.
  • Close links with patients and visitors using the hospital facilities, including contractors.
  • Close links with police and other emergency services.
