Head of Timber Engineering

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and dynamic Head of Timber Engineering to lead our engineered timber operations across three dedicated UK sites. This senior leadership role combines technical expertise, operational excellence, and commercial responsibility. You will oversee production, drive continuous improvement, and provide specialist support to customers and internal teams.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & People Management

  • Lead and support multi‑site teams including production, design and sales.
  • Build a positive, accountable culture with a focus on safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Operations & Production

  • Support daily operations across all three timber engineering sites.
  • Ensure products are manufactured safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Support in managing capacity planning, production scheduling, and workflow improvements.
  • Work closely with Health & Safety to maintain compliance and best practice on every site.

Commercial & Sales

  • Take ownership of the commercial performance of the Timber Engineering division.
  • Support and guide sales teams on engineered timber products, technical solutions, and customer needs.
  • Build strong relationships with key customers such as housebuilders, contractors, and developers.
  • Monitor pricing, margin performance, and market trends to maximise profitability.

Technical Expertise

  • Act as the senior technical lead for timber engineering within the Group.
  • Provide design and engineering oversight for trusses, joists, timber frame, and related products.
  • Support customers and sales teams with value‑engineered solutions and technical guidance.
  • Maintain high standards of compliance with relevant engineering, quality, and industry regulations.

Improvement & Development

  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, increase output, and reduce waste.
  • Support investment plans for equipment, technology, and site capability upgrades.
  • Help shape the future direction of the timber engineering service within Huws Gray.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with branches, procurement, health & safety, transport, and senior management to ensure the timber engineering division operates effectively as part of the wider Group.
  • Represent Timber Engineering at senior internal meetings and contribute to key business decisions.
Skills & Experience
  • Strong leadership experience within engineered timber, timber frame, or off‑site manufacturing.
  • A solid understanding of timber engineering design, structural principles, and manufacturing processes.
  • Proven track record managing multi‑site operations or large‑scale manufacturing.
  • Commercial acumen with experience in sales support, pricing, and margin management.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and non‑technical teams.
  • Confident decision maker with a practical, solutions‑focused approach.
