Job description

The Head of Construction for UK Major Projects leads and oversees all construction activities related to large capital projects at Springfields, UK. These projects represent a significant expansion of current operations and involve the construction of multiple new buildings in partnership with Tier 1 Contractors. You will work with the EPC Director, Construction Director, and other key stakeholders to ensure safe, efficient, and execution of construction tasks. You will be work onsite.

You will provide oversight of site contractors during building construction and process equipment installation, ensuring compliance with all local procedures, CDM regulations, and regulatory expectations. Daily collaboration with EH&S, Regulatory Affairs, and project teams is necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve construction sequencing, resource use, and site logistics.
  • Oversee on-site construction activities including field management, subcontractor coordination, equipment deployment, and adherence to safety and quality standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement in site safety, productivity, and quality.
  • Ensure construction work meets design specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements through rigorous quality control.
  • Coordinate development of construction plans and schedules with internal teams and contractors, ensuring alignment with milestones, budgets, and compliance.
  • Monitor construction costs and schedules, identifying opportunities for recovery while maintaining quality.
  • Identify and mitigate construction-related risks to protect project timelines and budgets.
  • Support selection of suitable EPC contractors, emphasising project fit, experience, qualifications, and familiarity with NEC ECC contracts (New Engineering Contract – Engineering and Construction Contract)
  • Lead project team meetings with EPC and suppliers
  • Attend EPC and subcontractor meetings to maintain alignment and resolve issues.
  • Deliver monthly Executive Reports with KPI dashboards and narratives to update leadership on EPC progress.
  • Facilitate and support EPC change orders and ensure accurate quality documentation.
  • Collaborate with Regulatory Affairs to coordinate inspections and documentation reviews.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 15+ years of experience in construction management, including at least 5 years in highly regulated industries such as nuclear or chemical.
  • Experience managing industrial construction projects with contract values of £500M+.
  • Experience with CDM regulations and experience working on highly regulated sites.
  • Strong expertise in construction planning, scheduling, budgeting, and field supervision.
  • Familiarity with construction management tools and software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6).
  • Analytical thinking to address challenges and implement solutions.
