Job summary

Great Kimble Church of England School is seeking a flexible support assistant to work with Year 1/2 pupils, providing 1:1 support and small group activities as needed. The role involves planning, helping adapt materials, and assisting with classroom organisation and pupil welfare.

You will assist with reading, writing, and a range of activities, supporting pupils with diverse needs and contributing to EHCP/ SEND meetings as appropriate. A collaborative, proactive approach is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Discuss and contribute to the teacher’s programme/plan for the lesson/day/week/term.
  • Help adapt differentiated materials to enable children to access the curriculum.
  • Assist with the general management and organisation of children and resources/equipment relating to the support of children.
  • Assist with the planning, organising and supervising of educational visits and outings.
  • Prepare classroom and associated areas for use including preparing materials, and setting out equipment, apparatus etc.
  • Clean and put away materials, equipment, and apparatus after use; tidy classroom and associated areas.
  • Make up and maintain work/topic cards/sheets/books and other teaching aids; prepare work and notices for display; assist with displays and interest tables.
  • Work with and support individuals or groups of children on activities such as reading, writing, practical, creative, physical, recreational activities and environmental studies.
  • Develop an understanding of the specific needs of pupils to be supported.
  • Be aware of vulnerable groups of children including those eligible for pupil premium funding.
  • Aid pupils to learn effectively in group and individual settings; develop independent learning skills.
  • Promote and model creative, imaginative and constructive play; guide development of social behaviour, attitudes, self-esteem and skills.
  • Assist the class teacher and SENDCo/Inclusion Co-ordinator to develop suitable programmes of support and carry out the support, in-class or withdrawal.
  • Provide feedback about pupils’ difficulties and progress to the class teacher and SENDCo/Inclusion Co-ordinator; participate in evaluation of support programmes.
  • Assist with supervision of children in classroom settings, assemblies, play/meal times, outings and educational visits; help children participate in activities by adapting instructions.
  • Administer support care/first aid, report injuries, and issue prescribed medication following policy; care for children taken ill and inform parents after Headteacher notification; ensure Health and Safety compliance.
  • Liaise with other staff and multi-professional services; contribute to EHCP/other SEND meetings; foster links between home and school.
  • Attend courses and training days to develop experience and skills; participate in the school’s appraisal process.
  • Play a full part in school life by attending charity/social events, sports days and PTA events; maintain confidentiality; promote a positive image of the school.
