Job summary

Essex County Council is hiring a Customer Services Assistant for Colchester Central Library. This permanent, full-time role includes working every Saturday and offers a salary up to £25,959 per year.

You will support book circulation, assist customers, signpost to services, and help enhance the library experience across locations. You’ll be part of a dynamic team driving customer-focused service, with opportunities to deliver story sessions and engage families.

Qualifications

• Demonstration that you know how to use IT systems, or have the ability to learn.
• Customer service experience in any area.
• Confidence in speaking to our customers and signposting them to Library services and other Council services.
• Enthusiasm and ideas.
• Enjoy working within a team to make us as brilliant as possible.

Responsibilities

• First and foremost you like helping people with empathy and patience while using self-service equipment.
• Arranging and conducting Rhymetime sessions for families with babies and toddlers.
• Support Health & Safety and help sort issues as they arise.
• Contribute to promotional activities to increase library income and roll out across branches.
• Assist customers with the library catalogue and full offer.
• Ensure stock circulation including sorting, shelving, tidying, and handling reservations and fines.
• Utilise data to focus on customer and staff improvements.
• Assist with unlocking/locking up and act as a trusted keyholder for smaller libraries.
