Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Trust's Commercial, Planning and Costing team for a Costing Accountant. This is a full time Band 4 post based at Thurrock Community Hospital in Grays. The Costing Accountant will assist with the provision of financial advice, information, costings and provide support to commercial opportunities, including responding to tenders for services and acquisitions.

The post holder will have good IT skills and be proficient in the use of Excel. You should have a knowledge of costing principles and have experience of working in a finance environment. Whilst NHS finance experience is not necessary, you should have a knowledge of the NHS finance regime and awareness of current NHS issues.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop new skills and broaden your finance knowledge and experience within a small and supportive team. An attractive financial training and study package will be offered to outstanding candidates considering studying for a CCAB or CIMA qualification. This post provides an excellent opportunity for you to join a professional finance team and develop your career within NHS Finance. You will be required to travel to meet with Budget Holders as part of the provision of financial services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Assist with financial support for new business opportunities/bids.
  • Support the production of the costing submissions, for internal and external use, including but not limited to the National Cost Collection.
  • Assist in modelling activity and workforce plans to enable costing and understanding of risks.
  • Support the development of costs, budgets and prices for both the short and long term across the Trust.
  • Assist the development of Mental Health contract currencies through provision of patient level and service line costs.

Education/Qualifications

  • Essential criteria: Level 6 GCSE or equivalent in Maths and Level 4 GCSE or equivalent in English
  • Desirable criteria: Engaged in study for AAT level 4 or CCAB or equivalent professional body, or equivalent knowledge gained through extensive experience in a similar role

Additional Qualities

  • Essential criteria: Ability to travel across sites and across Trust boundaries to attend meetings, etc
  • Desirable criteria: Current UK driving licence

Personal Qualities

  • Essential criteria: Shares the Trust\'s Beliefs and models this in their attitude and behaviour

Knowledge

  • Essential criteria: Awareness of NHS finance regime
  • Awareness of current NHS issues and challenges
  • Desirable criteria: Knowledge of NHS costing principles, Patient-Level Information Costing system (PLICS) and Service Line costing.

Skills/Experience

  • Essential criteria: Proficient in use of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Outlook. Advanced skills in Excel. Good oral and written communication skills. Good time management skills with the ability to work to deadlines. Ability to work under pressure.
  • Desirable criteria: Experience of Microsoft PowerBi. Able to use SQL and/or VBA.

Personal Qualities

  • Essential criteria: High degree of accuracy and excellent attention to detail. Ability to work as part of a team and contribute to the achievement of team objectives.
