Overview

Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust is advertising for a post in the Fetal Medicine unit. The unit specialises in care for women with high risk or problematic pregnancies and acts as a specialist referral centre for diagnosis and management of fetal conditions including fetal surgery or follow up after delivery, significant fetal cardiac anomalies, chromosomal and genetic conditions, structural fetal defects, twin and higher multiples, and pregnancies affected by red cell antibody incompatibility.

Roles of the post
  • Work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team to offer expert opinion and compassionate advice to women.
  • Provide consultant-led clinics, including diabetes and bereavement clinics.
  • Labour ward consultant cover 1 in 5 weeks.
  • Perform elective Caesarean list.
  • Obstetrics non-resident on call commitments as part of the departmental on call rota.
  • Attend weekly MDT meetings and monthly consultant meetings.
  • Provide high quality care to patients and adhere to GMC standards for Good Medical Practice.
  • Develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties of the post.
  • Ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care programmed activities and involve patients in decisions about their care.
  • Demonstrate, model and encourage Trust values to patients and staff.
  • Contribute to research, teaching and training, including high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and other health care professionals as agreed with Service Leads.
  • Act as a clinical supervisor and appraiser as delegated to ensure external accreditation of training posts.
  • Collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust’s translational research and audit portfolio, adhering to Research Governance.
  • Keep mandatory training up to date and participate in continuing professional development and study leave where eligible.
  • Participate in performance management, clinical efficiency, quality of outcomes, infection control targets, financial management and other areas of service delivery as outlined.
  • Work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance, appropriate junior doctor hours and compliance with EWTD.
  • Recruitment, induction and ongoing assessment of junior medical staff and participation in departmental activities including meetings and team building.
  • Governance: adhere to referral pathways, review clinical outcomes, participate in clinical audits, incident reporting, and ensure actions are implemented.
  • Clinical guidelines and protocols: ensure adherence and updates; stay informed about best practice and infection control; report accidents or incidents promptly.
  • Strategy and Leadership: contribute to business planning, represent the Trust in external clinical networks, attend departmental meetings and promote leadership development as required.
  • Foster equality and diversity in training, people management and service delivery.

The post holder will have secretarial support from a senior patient administrator and a desk in a shared office with access to a computer. The Trust’s neonatal and paediatric surgery centre in North West London collaborates with gynaecology and other hospitals to deliver integrated care. There are weekly fetal growth clinics and expertise in complex pregnancy and fetal issues; support is offered to women and their partners throughout decision-making and future pregnancies.

Requirements and expectations

The post requires a high-quality obstetrics service in conjunction with consultant colleagues and ongoing responsibility for care within the team. The applicant is expected to provide senior clinical leadership on the postnatal ward, participate in management and committee work, and engage in regular audits and QIPs. The Directorate holds weekly MDT and educational meetings, monthly consultant meetings, and a range of departmental activities. The advert closes on Tuesday 6 Jan 2026.
