Job summary

Elsevier's TIO team is seeking a Systems Engineer I to help ensure reliability, scalability, and performance of production systems on AWS, collaborating with software engineers and platform teams across NL, London, and India.

This entry-to-mid level role is ideal for engineers early in their career who want to grow skills in cloud infrastructure, automation, and observability, with mentorship and opportunities to contribute to IaC, incident response, and deployment pipelines.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years in Systems Engineering/DevOps/SRE or similar role.
• Hands-on AWS experience (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, CloudWatch, IAM).
• Familiarity with IaC tools (Terraform, CloudFormation).
• Knowledge of containerization/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Scripting in Python, Go, or Bash.
• Experience with monitoring/observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, CloudWatch).
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions).
• Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet).
• Exposure to SLO/SLI/error budgets frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Monitor, maintain, and improve reliability, availability, and performance of production systems running on AWS.
• Respond to incidents and drive root cause analysis and postmortems.
• Build and maintain automation for deployment, monitoring, and infrastructure management (Infrastructure as Code).
• Collaborate with development teams to improve system observability (logging, metrics, tracing, alerting).
• Contribute to capacity planning, performance tuning, and cost optimization efforts.
• Write and maintain runbooks, documentation, and operational procedures.
• Support CI/CD pipelines and help improve deployment safety and velocity.
