Job summary

Elsevier is seeking a Systems Engineer I to join our TIO team. You will help ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of production systems on AWS, collaborating with software engineers and platform teams.

Ideal for early-career engineers aiming to grow in cloud infrastructure, automation, and operational excellence. This entry-to-mid-level role emphasizes hands-on cloud work, infra as code, and observability.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years of experience in a Systems Engineering, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or similar role.
• Hands-on experience with AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, CloudWatch, IAM)
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar)
• Working knowledge of containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Scripting/programming experience in one or more languages (Python, Go, Bash, etc.)
• Understanding of monitoring/observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, CloudWatch)
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools and practices (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, etc.)
• Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet)
• Exposure to SLO/SLI/error budget frameworks

Responsibilities

• Monitor, maintain, and improve the reliability, availability, and performance of production systems running on AWS
• Respond to incidents and help drive root cause analysis and postmortems
• Build and maintain automation for deployment, monitoring, and infrastructure management (Infrastructure as Code)
• Collaborate with development teams to improve system observability (logging, metrics, tracing, alerting)
• Contribute to capacity planning, performance tuning, and cost optimization efforts
• Write and maintain runbooks, documentation, and operational procedures
• Support CI/CD pipelines and help improve deployment safety and velocity
