Job summary

Elsevier is seeking a Systems Engineer I to join the TIO team. You will help ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of systems powering Elsevier's products, collaborating with engineers across the Netherlands, London, and India.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years of experience in Systems Engineering/DevOps/SRE.
• AWS hands-on experience (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, CloudWatch, IAM).
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation).
• Knowledge of containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Scripting in Python/Go/Bash; coding experience preferred.
• Experience with monitoring/observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, CloudWatch).
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions).
• Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet).
• Exposure to SLO/SLI/error budget frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Monitor, maintain, and improve reliability, availability, and performance of production systems on AWS.
• Respond to incidents and drive root-cause analyses and postmortems.
• Build and maintain automation for deployment, monitoring, and IaC.
• Collaborate with development to improve observability (logs, metrics, traces, alerts).
• Contribute to capacity planning, performance tuning, and cost optimization.
• Write and maintain runbooks and operational procedures.
• Support CI/CD pipelines to improve deployment safety and velocity.

About the Role

Elsevier is looking for a Systems Engineer I to join our TIO team. In this role, you'll help ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of the systems that power Elsevier's products, working closely with software engineers, platform teams, and other systems engineers. This is an entry-to-mid-level position, ideal for engineers early in their career who want to grow their skills in cloud infrastructure, automation, and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

• Monitor, maintain, and improve the reliability, availability, and performance of production systems running on AWS
• Respond to incidents and help drive root cause analysis and postmortems
• Build and maintain automation for deployment, monitoring, and infrastructure management (Infrastructure as Code)
• Collaborate with development teams to improve system observability (logging, metrics, tracing, alerting)
• Contribute to capacity planning, performance tuning, and cost optimization efforts
• Write and maintain runbooks, documentation, and operational procedures
• Support CI/CD pipelines and help improve deployment safety and velocity

Requirements

• 1-3 years of experience in a Systems Engineering, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or similar role
• Hands-on experience with AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, CloudWatch, IAM)
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar)
• Working knowledge of containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Scripting/programming experience in one or more languages (Python, Go, Bash, etc.)
• Understanding of monitoring/observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, CloudWatch)
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools and practices (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, etc.)
• Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet)

If performed in NLD Amsterdam (Radarweg), the base pay range is €40,400 - €67,400.
