Job summary

Elsevier is seeking a Systems Engineer I to help ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of the systems powering Scopus. This entry-to-mid-level role offers exposure to cloud infrastructure, IaC, automation, and observability across global engineering teams.

You will work closely with software engineers and platform teams to improve deployment safety, incident response, and operational excellence, with a strong mentorship environment for early-career engineers.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years of experience in a Systems Engineering, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or similar role
• Hands-on experience with AWS services (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, CloudWatch, IAM)
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar)
• Working knowledge of containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Scripting/programming experience (Python, Go, Bash)
• Understanding of monitoring/observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, CloudWatch)
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools and practices (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions)
• Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet)
• Exposure to SLO/SLI/error budget frameworks

Responsibilities

• Monitor, maintain, and improve reliability, availability, and performance of production systems on AWS
• Respond to incidents and drive root cause analysis and postmortems
• Build and maintain automation for deployment, monitoring, and Infrastructure as Code
• Collaborate with development teams to improve observability (logging, metrics, tracing, alerting)
• Contribute to capacity planning, performance tuning, and cost optimization
• Write and maintain runbooks, documentation, and operational procedures
• Support CI/CD pipelines and help improve deployment safety and velocity

About The Role

Elsevier is looking for a Systems Engineer I to join our TIO team. In this role, you'll help ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of the systems that power Elsevier's products, working closely with software engineers, platform teams, and other systems engineers. This is an entry-to-mid-level position, ideal for engineers early in their career who want to grow their skills in cloud infrastructure, automation, and operational excellence.

If performed in NLD Amsterdam (Radarweg), the base pay range is €40,400 - €67,400. This job may be subject to a collective labor agreement in the Netherlands. Please consult with the hiring team for further details.
