Clinical Facilitator for Epilepsy and Long Term Health Conditions

Do you have a passion for reducing Health Inequalities for people with Learning Disabilities and Autistic people?

The LeDeR Report 2025 (actually the 2023 data, published in late 2025) from NHS England confirms people with Learning Disabilities and Autistic People still die prematurely from avoidable causes.

Epilepsy and Learning Disabilities frequently co‑occur, with about 1 in 5 people with a Learning Disability also having epilepsy, and this risk increases with the severity of the Learning Disabilities.

We are looking for a motivated individual with experience of working with people with Learning Disabilities and/or Autistic People and skills and interest in teaching staff to gain the knowledge and competence to ensure that Epilepsy and Long Term Health conditions are managed effectively.

You will work closely with our physical health team including Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Practice Nurse team and Dietitian and will support both inpatient and Community Learning Disability and Autism services.

Main duties of the job
  • The post holder will take a lead, alongside relevant others, in developing training, advice and competencies for both inpatient and community settings required to ensure effective outcomes for service users with Epilepsy and other long term health conditions.
  • To work with the matrons, Clinical Educator and Advanced Clinical Practitioners in the facilitation of training and development for clinical teams working across the Learning Disabilities and Autism Directorate (LD&A), focusing on supporting and embedding the highest standards of evidence based clinical practice in relation to the care of those with Epilepsy and other long term health conditions.
  • The post holder will divide their time between teaching and assessing in clinical practice and assisting with the development, facilitation and evaluation of professional development programmes for all staff working with individuals with epilepsy and other long term health conditions.
  • The post holder will pro‑actively contribute to the maintenance and reporting of accurate training records and competencies across the teams and will assist with the preparation of training and professional development reports as required.

Job responsibilities
  • To implement & evaluate competencies across the Learning Disability and Autism directorate in relation to Epilepsy and other long term health conditions.
  • To conduct audit for epilepsy competencies in line with Epilepsy Specialist Nurse Association (ESNA) competencies.
  • To be an active member of regional epilepsy groups and be the directorates link with wider epilepsy networks.
  • To support with the development, delivery and review of epilepsy training packages within the directorate.
  • Support staff in the development and review of epilepsy care plans.
  • To provide teaching and training of others in relation to other physical health conditions e.g. diabetes.
  • To contribute to the development of competency frameworks and development programmes for clinical staff.
  • Provide support and clinical leadership engaging with, Student Nurse Associates and Assistant Practitioners, the mentors, and their managers.
  • Support teams and advise on equipment in relation to Epilepsy and other long term health conditions.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • RNLD who holds current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Nationally recognised teaching qualification & relevant experience or willing to work towards one.
  • Relevant teaching experience
  • Nationally recognised qualification in Epilepsy care or willingness to work towards one
Knowledge
  • Basic IT skills
  • Research and Audit skills
  • Must be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of the care of individuals with epilepsy and other long term health conditions
  • Must be able to demonstrate sound personal management skills - time, prioritisation, planning
  • Must be able to demonstrate an engaging inter‑personal style of teaching
  • Must have an awareness of audit and research and be able to undertake and implement
  • Must have a willingness to develop new skills to support the role
  • Ability to prioritise and work to deadlines
Experience
  • To have a strong clinical and academic background in the field of Learning Disability practice
  • To be up to date with National guidance, policy direction and legislation on the care of people with a Learning Disability and Epilepsy
  • Demonstrable post registration learning relevant to the role applied for
  • Demonstrable experience working at Band 5 or above within a Learning Disabilities provider healthcare setting
  • Recent background in clinical practice
