Job summary

St Mary's Catholic Primary School is seeking a Class/SEN Teaching Assistant to join on a fixed term contract until July 2027. The role runs 32.5 hours per week during term time (38 weeks), Monday to Friday, 8.30am–3.30pm, starting 3 November 2026.

Key duties include supporting teachers, aiding pupils with SEN, addressing barriers to learning, supervising at lunch and play, and safeguarding in line with school policies.

Qualifications

• Numeracy and literacy skills are required.
• Reasonable IT skills are expected.
• Experience of working with children, in a primary school setting, is desirable.

Responsibilities

A Class/SEN Teaching Assistant is required from Tuesday 3rd November 2026 between 8.30am and 3.30pm. The hours are non-negotiable on this occasion.
Duties include:

• Assisting the class teachers and senior leadership team in providing a secure, caring environment in which each child can find new, stimulating opportunities to develop his/her potential – emotionally, socially, physically and intellectually.
• To contribute towards the support for pupils in the class with Special Educational Needs.
• To address the needs of children to overcome barriers to learning, both inside and outside of the classroom, in order to achieve their full potential and enable the school to raise standards of achievement and maintain outstanding standards of behaviour.
• To help supervise children at lunch and play to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
• To know and understand responsibilities of child protection and the need to safeguard children and always follow appropriate procedures to ensure the safety of children. Our Child Protection Policy can be viewed on our website.

Applicants should be articulate with relevant skills in numeracy and literacy and have reasonable IT skills. Experience of working with children, in a primary school setting, is desirable. Appropriate qualifications and experience would also be an advantage and we can offer the successful candidate Continued Professional Development to support their specific role.
