Role: Specialist Nurse

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD), Independent / Supplementary Prescriber (V300)

Location: Range of community settings

We are expanding our established nursing team within our Neurodevelopmental Pathway, which includes Autism (ASD) assessment and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Services. You will work closely with our Autism and ADHD teams to participate in safe and effective assessments for Children, Young People and their families, liaising with health, education and social care to offer the best support to families of children with suspected ASD & ADHD.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be part of the neurodevelopmental pathway team aimed at improving the care of children with ADHD across the city, both pre- and post-diagnosis. The nurse-led service will require child and family-centered care, working as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside medical and other health, educational and voluntary services. The post holder will be supervised by the ADHD Nursing - Team Leader to maximise professional development and reflective practice.

Responsibilities (selected)
  • Work closely with the neurodevelopmental pathway team to develop, implement, and monitor services for children, young people and their families.
  • Be a key member of the ADHD multidisciplinary team, collaborating with Consultant Paediatricians and other health professionals.
  • Perform preliminary assessments of new referrals across Birmingham using agreed assessment tools and record observations in schools, clinics, and home settings.
  • Act as an Advanced Nurse Prescriber for ADHD-related medicines in line with NMC, NICE and national guidelines.
  • Implement a family-centered care approach that involves the child in decision-making.
  • Provide comprehensive, inclusive assessment of children referred with ADHD symptoms and comorbidities using diverse data sources.
  • First point of contact for queries, offering advice and signposting to outside agencies on a rota basis.
  • Coordinate with parents/carers to resolve concerns locally before escalating to the team leader.
  • Prescribe safely under Clinical Management Plans and maintain pharmaceutical knowledge with regular audit of prescribing practice.
  • Ensure safeguarding, risk assessment, and management in line with Trust policies and child protection guidelines.
  • Coordinate transition from child to adult ADHD services to ensure continuity of care.
  • Maintain contemporaneous clinical records in line with NMC guidelines.
Management and Leadership
  • Provide clinical leadership, consultation, and supervision within the ADHD service and wider MDT.
  • Represent the team in multiagency meetings and contribute to clinical governance and quality improvement.
  • Assist in induction of new staff and contribute to Trust policy reviews related to the ADHD service.
Educational and Development
  • Maintain professional development and NMC revalidation requirements.
  • Access clinical supervision and CPD opportunities related to non-medical prescribing.
  • Develop expertise within ADHD and identify personal learning needs.
Qualifications and Experience (Essential/Desirable)

Qualifications
Essential: Registered Nurse BSc (Hons) Level 1 RGN or equivalent; Evidence of CPD in last 2 years; Independent/Supplementary prescriber (V300) for ADHD medications on the team caseload
Desirable: ENB 998 or equivalent

Experience
Essential: Experience in ADHD management including assessment of complex presentations; knowledge of audit processes; understanding child protection; effective communication with families and professionals; health education delivery
Desirable: Extensive experience in children’s services for SEND/learning disability

Skills/Knowledge
Essential: NMC Code knowledge; analytical skills; current NHS/primary care legislation awareness; accurate writing; experience with complex needs; awareness of ethnic minority needs
Desirable: CAMHS training

Personal Qualities
Essential: Team work, autonomous working, adaptability to NHS change, effective communication
