Job summary

Saab UK is seeking a Flight Control Systems Engineer in Bedfordshire to develop and maintain safety-critical flight control software using MATLAB/Simulink. You will verify algorithms with bespoke simulations, deploy to hardware, and conduct live flight tests at our nearby facility.

The role requires a degree in aerospace engineering, solid knowledge of aerodynamics and flight mechanics, hands-on control systems experience, and National Security Vetting clearance.

Qualifications

• Essential: Degree in aerospace engineering or similar.
• Understanding of aerodynamics and flight mechanics, and their impact on flight control.
• Experience in using MATLAB/Simulink for developing algorithms and control laws.
• Hands-on experience in designing and commissioning control systems.
• Existing SC Clearance.
• Desirable: Experience designing and implementing guidance, navigation and control for fixed/rotary wing vehicles.
• Knowledge of sensing systems.
• Hands-on experience with small UAS.
• Mathworks Stateflow, Simulink Coder and Embedded Coder packages.
• Experience developing mathematical algorithms e.g. data fusion, state estimation.
• Experience with embedded, real-time, safety-critical systems.
• Knowledge of communication systems.
• Version control systems e.g. Git.
• C++, Java, Python development skills.
• Experience with DO-178, ED-20x safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and test safety-critical software for flight control systems.
• Contribute to requirements definition and design of flight control laws.
• Use MATLAB/Simulink to generate and validate algorithms, data manipulation, and control laws.
• Verify and validate via bespoke simulations before deploying on target hardware.
• Conduct real-world flight testing at the company test facility close to the office.
• Present testing findings in reports and customer-facing presentations.
• Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team and help improve processes and methods.
• Ensure quality targets and continuous improvement of techniques.
