Job summary

Walker & Sloan in Bristol is seeking an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join a leading building contractor. You will work with experienced commercial colleagues, developing your knowledge of project costs, procurement and subcontract management.

From initial procurement to final account, you will support the team, preparing enquiry packages, evaluating quotations, assisting with orders and carrying out valuations.

Qualifications

• Experience in quantity surveying within a construction business, ideally with a main contractor.
• Understanding of measurement, valuations and procurement.
• Good numerical skills and attention to detail.
• Organised and able to communicate with subcontractors and site colleagues.
• Qualification in Quantity Surveying or Construction, either completed or in progress.

Responsibilities

• Prepare enquiry packages, compare subcontractor quotations and assist with orders.
• Assist with applications for payment, carry out valuations and maintain records of variations and project expenditure.
• Contribute to cost reports and forecasts, support senior colleagues in identifying risks and keeping budgets under control.
• Conduct site visits to understand progress and connect commercial responsibilities with on-site activities.
• Develop ownership of individual packages with guidance from the wider commercial team.

The Opportunity

Walker & Sloan is recruiting an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join an established building contractor in Bristol.

You'll work alongside experienced commercial colleagues, developing your knowledge of project costs, procurement and subcontract management. If you're looking to build on your early quantity surveying experience and take on more responsibility, this role offers involvement throughout the project lifecycle.

Role Overview

You'll support the commercial team from initial procurement through to final account, working closely with project managers, site teams and subcontractors.

Your work will include preparing enquiry packages, comparing subcontractor quotations and assisting with orders. You'll help assess applications for payment, carry out valuations and maintain accurate records of variations and project expenditure.

You'll also contribute to cost reports and forecasts, supporting senior colleagues in identifying risks and keeping budgets under control. Site visits will help you understand progress, review completed work and connect your commercial responsibilities with what's happening on the ground.

As you develop, you'll take greater ownership of individual packages, with guidance from the wider commercial team.

About You

You'll have some experience in quantity surveying within a construction business, ideally a main contractor. You may currently be an Assistant or Graduate Quantity Surveyor looking to broaden your experience.

You'll have an understanding of measurement, valuations and procurement, together with good numerical skills and attention to detail. You'll be organised, willing to ask questions and comfortable communicating with subcontractors and site colleagues.

A relevant qualification in Quantity Surveying or Construction, either completed or in progress, would be beneficial.
