Job summary

Walker & Sloan is recruiting an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join an established Bristol-based main contractor. You will support commercial management from procurement through final account, coordinating with site teams and subcontractors while developing ownership of packages as experience grows.

You’ll handle subcontract enquiries, quotations, valuations and variations, contributing to cost reporting and forecasting and maintaining accurate commercial records.

The Opportunity

Walker & Sloan is recruiting an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join an established regional main contractor in Bristol.

You’ll work on a varied portfolio of construction projects, supporting the commercial team while developing your ability to manage packages and take on greater responsibility. This opportunity could also suit you if you’re moving towards Quantity Surveyor level and want a role that reflects your existing experience.

Role Overview

You’ll support the commercial management of projects from procurement through to final account, working closely with site teams, subcontractors and senior commercial colleagues.

Your responsibilities will include preparing subcontract enquiries, comparing quotations and assisting with subcontract orders. You’ll review applications for payment, value completed work and help ensure variations are identified, recorded and assessed.

You’ll contribute to cost reporting and forecasting, keeping commercial records accurate and highlighting potential risks. Regular contact with project teams will help you understand progress on site and the financial implications of changes to the works.

As your experience develops, you’ll take greater ownership of subcontract packages and project commercial activities.

About You

You’ll have experience as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor or an early-career Quantity Surveyor within a building contractor. Experience with new build, refurbishment or fit out projects would be relevant.

You’ll have a grounding in procurement, valuations and variations, alongside a willingness to develop your commercial knowledge. You’ll be comfortable working with figures, reviewing drawings and communicating with site teams and subcontractors.

A qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related construction discipline, either completed or in progress, would be beneficial. Just as valuable will be your attention to detail, practical approach and readiness to take responsibility.
