Job summary

Greene King is seeking an Assistant Manager for The Horseshoe, a lively wet-led pub in Downend. You will work hands-on on the pub floor, supporting the General Manager, leading the team and creating a welcoming atmosphere for regulars and the local community.

This pro-rata role offers 32–36 hours per week with flexible shifts, and a salary in the £31k–£34.75k range plus bonus. You’ll drive great service during peak nights and participate in events and fundraisers.

Qualifications

• Experience in hospitality supervisory or management role.

Responsibilities

• Supporting the General Manager with day-to-day running of the pub and stepping up in their absence.
• Leading from the front, working with the team and setting service standards.
• Creating a welcoming atmosphere and building relationships with regulars and the local community.
• Managing busy shifts confidently, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.
• Reading situations and handling challenging moments calmly and professionally.
• Maintaining high standards across service, cleanliness, safety and compliance.
• Leveraging live sport, DJ nights and events to drive trade and create memorable experiences.
• Organising and delivering community events and charity fundraisers, including Macmillan events.
• Coaching and motivating the team to develop and perform at their best.

The Horseshoe is a busy, wet-led pub where personality, pace and people skills really matter. With a younger crowd bringing plenty of energy on Friday and Saturday nights, we're looking for someone confident, hands-on and comfortable managing a lively atmosphere.

As Assistant Manager, you'll work alongside the team on the pub floor, not from behind an office desk. You'll be visible, approachable and ready to get stuck in — whether that's serving customers, supporting the team during a busy shift or making sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.

You'll be responsible for:

Qualifications

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone with personality, confidence and a genuine passion for pubs. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, but you do need to be comfortable engaging with customers, leading a team and taking control when the pub gets busy.

Ideally, you'll have:

• Previous experience in a hospitality supervisory or management role.
• Confidence working in a busy, wet-led pub, bar or similar environment.
• A hands-on approach — you're happiest out on the floor, working alongside your team.
• Strong people skills and the ability to communicate with a wide range of customers.
• The confidence to manage lively environments and deal with situations calmly and fairly.
• A customer-first mindset and a real eye for service standards.
• The ability to motivate a team, make decisions and keep things running smoothly under pressure.
