Job summary

DVLA Swansea is seeking an Application Operations Engineer for extended days. You will deliver application support across multiple products, investigate incidents, and guide junior engineers, within a hybrid working setup near Swansea.

The role requires strong analytical skills, experience with bespoke applications, and the ability to interpret code during troubleshooting. A pension with employer contributions is provided along with a 20% shift allowance.

Location: Swansea (This role is suitable for hybrid working)

The salary of £39,163 (basic salary £35,663) includes a non-pensionable Recruitment and Retention Allowance of £3,500. You'll also be entitled to an additional 20% shift allowance.

A Civil Service Pension with an employer contribution of 28.97%

We are looking for a passionate and enthusiastic Application Operations Engineer who will be comfortable working on a range of services at DVLA Swansea, across multiple products and technologies, covering both legacy and brand-new cloud-based applications using strong analytical skills to develop and support of DVLA's applications.

This role will provide you with the excellent opportunity to progress in your career. Our Application Operation Engineers will lead and be the point of escalation for more complicated issues so experience in application development using recognised programming languages is beneficial for this role.

Demonstrable experience in system support and continuous improvement will allow you to work on larger projects works within a technical framework of the project to meet and deliver on customer requirements.

• Carry out system support, including monitor applications, incident investigation and resolution, liaising with the incident manager or other stakeholders. Be able to describe technical issues to a wider audience of different technical knowledge, as well as provide recommendations.
• Working collaboratively supporting and mentoring junior Application Operations Engineers.
• Help maintain a team documentation library for collaboration and reference. Helps maintain a known fixes library or knowledge base. Ensures documentation represents best practice and standards.
• Assist with Problem Management investigation, providing technical input into the process.

About You

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

• You will have significant experience in application support and handling of larger incidents.
• You will also need to have experience in leading on all aspects of supporting bespoke applications.
• You will have excellent problem solving and analytical skills with attention to detail to allow you to identify the problem and apply an acceptable resolution.
• Excellent written communication skills are necessary for this role, along with the ability to work well as part of a team, as you will need to write a variety of documents including reports and technical specifications and mentor the junior members of the team.
• Whilst there isn't a requirement to be able to write code, we will need you to be able to interpret code as part of troubleshooting issues. Experience in application support, using recognised programming languages is desirable.
