Job summary

South Yorkshire Mechanical Services (SYMS) – Building Services Engineers, based in Sheffield, is seeking an Air Conditioning Engineer for a full-time, on-site role in the Greater Sheffield Area. You will install, commission, maintain, and repair HVAC systems in commercial, industrial, and healthcare environments, with tasks including fault finding, preventive maintenance, and performance testing.

You will contribute to project delivery, document reporting, and client advisory.

Qualifications

• HVAC installation, fault finding, and repair experience.
• Experience in building services engineering for commercial/industrial properties.
• Background in maintenance and repair, including preventive maintenance and reactive works.
• Understanding of FM practices, scheduling, documentation, and compliance.
• Relevant technical qualification or apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, refrigeration, or HVAC.
• F-Gas certification and knowledge of environmental and safety regs for HVAC.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
• Strong communication and professional client-site demeanor.
• Valid UK driving license and willingness to travel across the Greater Sheffield Area and country.

Responsibilities

Role Description

The Air Conditioning Engineer role is a full-time, on-site position located in the Greater Sheffield Area. The engineer will install, commission, maintain, and repair air conditioning and HVAC systems in commercial, industrial, and healthcare settings. Day-to-day tasks include fault finding, scheduled preventive maintenance, reactive repairs, and performance testing to ensure systems operate safely and efficiently. The role involves working closely with building services and facilities teams, preparing job reports, maintaining documentation, and adhering to relevant health and safety and industry standards. The engineer will also support project delivery, attend site visits, and provide technical advice to clients and colleagues as needed.

Qualifications

• Strong HVAC skills, including installation, maintenance, fault diagnosis, and repair of air conditioning systems.
• Experience in Building Services engineering, with knowledge of mechanical systems within commercial and industrial properties.
• Background in Building Maintenance and Maintenance & Repair, including planned preventive maintenance and reactive works.
• Understanding of Facility Management (FM) practices, including service scheduling, documentation, and compliance with regulations.
• Relevant technical qualification or apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, refrigeration, or HVAC (e.g., NVQ, City & Guilds, or equivalent).
• F-Gas certification and familiarity with current environmental, safety, and building regulations related to HVAC systems.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications, with strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
• Effective communication skills, professional attitude on client sites, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Valid UK driving license and willingness to travel to sites in the Greater Sheffield Area and, when required, across the country.
